The Framework and The Need of SUPW:
The present system of education is still predominantly bookish in character and generally irrelevant to the needs of society.
The National System of Education as conceived by our leaders during the national movement for freedom and as propounded-by Mahatma Gandhi has its genesis in work-based education. Gandhiji was against education leading to the search for white-collared jobs. He was of the opinion that if education is based on socially useful productive work, it would be an instrument for personality development and social transformation.
Socially useful productive work is to be developed in the light of the Gandhian philosophy of basic education which was work-centred. In Basic education as propounded by Gandhiji craft occupied a pivotal position because by education he meant drawing out of the best in the child and man-body, mind and spirit.
According to him literacy is no education and the entire curriculum should be woven around a basic craft. The Patel Committee has used the expression “education in and through work” for clarifying the Gandhian philosophy of Basic Education. Socially useful productive work is primarily a tool of education in work, and this work education should be imparted through work itself.
It is to emphasise the principle that education should be work centred. Socially useful productive work aims at developing harmonious development of the whole man, i e„ his body, mind, heart and spirit. The programme of work-experience lacked the component of social usefulness of subjects. But socially useful productive work has social usefulness. It is a tool for inculcating Gandhian values, viz., truth, non-violence, self-reliance, dignity of labour, cooperation, classless society etc.
The Concept of SUPW:
Socially Useful Productive work has been described by the Ishwarbhai Patel Committee as purposive, meaningful, manual work resulting into either goods or services which are useful to the community. Manual work becomes purposive when it meets the educational requirements.
For this purpose, it is necessary to go into the why and wherefore of every process of the work so that it is performed intelligently and not mechanically. A curricular activity proves meaningful when it is related to the needs of the learner and the community to which he belongs. It becomes more meaningful when it is related to the basic needs, viz., food, shelter, clothing, health and recreation and community and social service.
Socially useful productive work should be, as far as possible, be predominantly manual. Purposive, productive work and services related to the needs of the child and the community will prove meaningful to the learner. Such work must not be performed mechanically, but must include planning, analysis and detailed preparation, at every stage, so that it is educational in essence. Adoption of improved tools and material, where available, and the adoption of modern techniques will lead to an appreciation of the needs of a progressive society, based on technology.
Aim of SUPW:
The aim of this curricular area is to provide children with opportunities of participating in social and economic activities inside and outside the class room, enabling them to understand scientific principles and processes involved in different types of work and in the setting in which they are found in the physical and social environment.
To be productive the activities should result in:
(i) Either products which are directly consumable and salable or
(ii) Services having social and economic values.
To be socially useful the work activity should be relevant to meet the needs of the community and the individual child.
The criterion for selection of activities should, thus, be that the work involved is productive, educative and socially useful. It is felt that if socially useful productive work is given a central and dominant place in the curriculum the gap between work and education will be reduced, the school will not remain isolated from the community and the gulf that divides the affluent from the weaker and poorer sections of the community will be bridged. Such a scheme will provide equality of opportunity for working and learning to all children irrespective of caste, creed, sex and economic status.
Objectives:
- To give the spirit to student to do something for society and nation.
- To inspire the students to take the responsibility.
- To motivate the student to show their quality and aesthetic quality.
- To realize the student potential.
- To increase the confidence of students and sense of security.
- To know the importance of group work, co-operation.
- To help the needy, self-realisation, self-important, selflessness.
To achieve the educational objectives of this programme the problem solving approach should be adopted. Children should be made aware of the problems related to their needs; they should be led to arrive at solutions by discussing the material, tools and techniques necessary for performing such work and services.
ABOUT THE WORK I HAVE DONE
When our college suggest the work of supw me as a teacher student opted some products that can be done by reusing the waste materials especially from plastic because we know that plastic wastes is really a threat to our plannet thus as future students we need to encourage our students to reduce the use of plastic and then teach them to reuse the plastic wastes as much as possible.I think the value we as future teachers is to make a sense to our students that by reconverting waste into valuable products for reuse, we could create further incentives for businesses to invest into such forms of recycling.I think we can't ban the plastic completly but we can manage the use of it If you are like most people, it’s difficult to make it through your day without acquiring some form of plastic! That’s where reuse comes in. Once the plastic is in your possession, it is your chance to be creative and find different usages for it. Reuse plastic produce bags for sandwiches, plastic grocery bags for small trash bags, and re-use your plastic silverware! If you can’t find a use for something, donate it! Not only will you be reducing waste, you’ll be helping others. Most people skip this step and go directly to recycling, but reusing plastics can reduce the demand for new plastics to be created.
Thus i tried to make something that can be resued from plastic and other waste products
First product is from old perfume bottle which i converted to usefull decor items with a sweet fragrance too.I think while making this kind of things we can make our home into unique way with unique pieces of decors

This is a wall decor from very old thrown plastic fiber plate i added a small tree like structure into the plate using maida dough(instead of air dry clay) and coir.materials required: maida dough,black acrylic paint,metalic color ,old fiber plate
This what really useful for students we know that old pens are a waste product for students i tried to make is to something useful.

We know that electronic wastes are always a threat to environment it is good to teach our students to reuse this kind of things into useful product.

we know that kerala is a land of coconuts thus in supw i also tried to make something useful from coconut product for that i chose

Next thing i tried is to make a stuffed toy we know that students always love to play with toys thus while doing supw i tried to make a small stuffed toy .

It was really an amazing experience from our two days supw workshop held on october 12 & 13 really tried to alot of experiments in making different kind of things while taking with other students also i came to know that many of them are doing this kind of activities for the first time and it was a really good exprence and provided oppurtunity for creative self expression .
